Vineyard Reserve Touriga Nacional


Current Vintage = 2019

Native to the Dao Region of Portugal, the grape variety Touriga Nacional, is used in the production of the best Ports and arguably the best Portuguese red wines.

A portion of Drayton’s famous Oakey Creek vineyards was converted from Verdelho via grafting to Touriga Nacional.  The Verdelho rootstock being over forty years old was the perfect platform for the E6V12 clone to be added.

Touriga Nacional is a later ripening variety and may not always be the best in the Hunter Valley, but its small thicker-skinned berries will no doubt prove to be hardy enough to weather the vagaries of our wetter vintages.

This low yielding variety produces small berries and is renowned for the making wines of an extremely lifted aromatic profile reminiscent of violets and/or other sweet floral notes.  These are complemented by a black/blueberry fruit flavours that taste sweet and ripe.  On the palate the wines tend to display a degree of texture and has an extremely generous body due to the fine tannin and acidity interplay.

Touriga Nacional is generally harvested mid-February, then destemmed and crushed into a fermenter and inoculated with M2 yeast.  After around 12 days on skins it was pressed into 2-year-old and older oak for 6 months.  This is followed by blending, egg white fining and bottling.

This wine displays some of the attributes mentioned above and hopefully will reward some great drinking in the company of friends together with an Iberian food feast.
